The importance and maintenance of your trees is quite often underestimated. This can make a big difference to the health of a tree and can also have an impact on the value of your property. Every now and then, carrying out a tree health check is advised. This could be the difference between maintaining a healthy tree and costly work to your property caused by tree damage. There are a few signs to look out for to gauge the status and health of your trees.
The Tree Trunk
A straight tree, will often be a lot more stable and therefore safer than trees that are not as well formed. The main centre trunk is the core strength and stability.
Growth
A tree in good health, should be able to generate more growth on the trunk and branches year on year. You can measure the growth of the tree by looking at the scars on the branches and compare this to last years. You should research your specific tree online to find out what the growth should be.
Branches
Pruning and maintaining your tree properly is very important. Tree pruning is the act of maintaining and cutting parts of your trees, for preventative measures like ensuring the beneficial growth of your trunk, but also the health of your branches. Dead branches often invite insects and bacteria to enter the rest of your tree. You can gauge whether some branches need to be pruned, by bending the branch. If the branch bends properly, it is still healthy and alive. If it snaps, it could indicate that the branch is dead and should therefore be removed.
The Bark
The bark is the outer layer of stems on your tree. This should be quite solid and not loose or peeling. If the bark is loose, it could indicate the need to call a tree surgeon to check your tree health. However, there are a few types of tree that have a softer layer of stem.
Leaves
The leaves are a strong indicator of your trees overall health. The colour should be right for the season.
